Accelerated Reading

Our 1-Day Accelerated Reading programme has always been popular as both open and in-company programmes.

Four local authorities in Kent have booked us to run three versions of the course. A compact evening programme for Elected Members, a one day programme for employees and a special for those studying for the Diploma in Management Studies.

With the bookings already made, the New Year will see us making our 20th visit to the county!

We are experiencing a similar take up with Local Police Authorities. The Met, Surrey and Thames Valley Police Authorities have, between them, invited us to run the programme ten times and for three seperate groups.

These include individuals wanting Personal Coaching as they prepare for promotional examinations. Members of specialist divisions, i.e. serious crime, and for senior officers throughout the Authorities.

Positive Thinking

Welcome to this our first posting on The Thinking Consultancy’s blog. As you would expect, we will be talking about ‘thinking’, specifically about what is, and what is not, Positive Thinking.

When you have active thoughts about the future, they register in your non-conscious mind as instructions. Positive thoughts aim to move you forward whilst negative thoughts will hold you back. Unfortunately many individuals make, what they think, are positive thoughts but they are in fact the reverse.

There are two main differences between Positive and Negative Thoughts.

Positive Thoughts;
· Contain action verbs that move you towards your new goal.
· Are composed with positive words.

Negative Thoughts on the other hand:
· Contain action verbs that move you away from your current position.
· Are composed of words that have a negative connotation.
· Read as a wish list with little or no commitment.

A Moving Towards statement should tell you
Where you are going,
How you will get there
How you will know you have arrived.
The statement makes your desire unambiguous.

A Moving Away statement will express what you want to move away from without necessarily saying where you want to move to. It will state what you want to stop doing without giving a reason or saying what you want to replace it.

Positive action verbs:
Achieve; Attain; Complete; Do; Finish; Gain;
Have; Master; Own; Start; Want; Will

Negative action verbs
Avoid; Don’t; Fail; Hope; Like; Lose;
Not; Ought; Should; Stop; Try; Wish

Example.
Dieting. Dropping your weight from 100 to 80 kilo
A Positive Thought would be I want to weigh 80 kilo before my holidays That is a positive moving towards statement.
Now that your mind knows what you want to weigh and by when it will work with you to achieve it.

Should lose, ought to lose, will try and lose are all negative expressions. They are all moving away from your existing position plus the word lose has, in this context, a negative connotation of its own. If you lose your wallet or purse what is the first thing you do? You set out to find it, to get it back!

Positive Thoughts are powerful especially when created as Well Formed Outcomes. However they are, in a way, only like sign posts. You still have to make the journey!
